Overview

There are stones in the walls of Visentium which are thought to have been cut over 3000 years ago, predating even Hannibal's great victory over the Roman armies very near this site. Nowadays, however, the area is a picture of pastoral calm and the old stones form part of an elegant yet very comfortable country home with a round medieval tower at its core with air-conditioned double bedrooms. From its hillside setting, Visentium gazes serenely over lush green lawns, the blue waters of Lake Trasimeno and rolling hills reaching to the horizon. Within, fine antiques and paintings adorn two living rooms, both leading out under an arched loggia overlooking the swimming pool - an ideal spot for outdoor meals, afternoon siestas and reading in the shade, or for watching children at play in the water. Within dining distance of Perugia, Visentium is also perfectly located for exploring hill towns large and small in both Tuscany and Umbria.

Location

 Magione, 10 minutes from the villa, sits in the hills above the eastern shore of Lake Trasimeno, about 20km/13 miles west of beautiful, bustling Perugia and 38km/24 miles west of Assisi. Walking trails link Magione with several hill towns to the north, notably Castel Rigone and Preggio (20 minutes by car for less intrepid). A ferry leaves Castiglione del Lago and San Feliciano for the lake's two islands, site of a Roman rout by Hannibal's forces in 217BC, Two famous hill towns, Todi and Cortona, are within 40 minutes' drive.

Ground floor

 Large sitting room leading out to an arched loggia and connected to a circular sitting room at the base of the tower. Third sitting room with a billiards table and a library. Large kitchen with a breakfast table. Dining room suitable for 20. Second smaller dining room. Simple twin bedroom [convertible to double] with a bathroom with bath. Arched colonnade with tables and chairs for dining or relaxing.

First floor

 The first floor is made up of three wings.

Pool wing

 Staircase from the ground floor leads up to a large landing from which you have an air conditioned double bedroom [Italian Queen size] with an en suite bathroom with bath a private balcony with a lounge facing the pool. Twin bedroom with an en suite bathroom with a bath. A second twin bedroom with an en suite bathroom with bath. The two twin bedrooms share a second balcony with a lounge facing with pool.

At the End of a corridor you have on the left a large sitting room with an open fireplace that leads out onto a terrace with a stone staircase leading down into the garden. On the right you enter the Tower wing. Pass through the sitting room to a corridor leading you to the Garden wing.

Tower wing

Grounds

 Visentium's lawns, woods and terraced olive groves gently slope right to the shore of Lake Trasimeno. The swimming pool, 7 x 14m/23 x 46 feet, is set immediately in front of the enormous loggia that runs the length of the house and is furnished for lounging and dining.

Assistance

 The property’s extremely helpful caretaker and his wife, who do not speak English, live in a flat at the rear of the villa with a separate entrance. Services included in the rental fee, and optional services available, are noted under Price and Availability.

Access

 Airports: Pisa, 2 hours; Rome, 2 hours 20 minutes. Motorway exit and railway station at Magione, 10 minutes. Along paved roads to the property's white access road and electric gates.Parking for eight cars.

Activities

 Two 18-hole golf courses within 25 minutes. Water sports on the lake. A favourite activity on Lake Trasimeno is the is the ferry trip to Isola Maggiore, the only inhabited island. There is an old fishing village on the island, with houses dating from the 14th and 16th centuries, and a ruined 19th century folly. St. Francis of Assisi is said to have slept here in 1211, and two little churches boast a variety of artefacts from and paintings of the event. Ferries to the island leave from Castiglione del Lago, Tuoro-sul-Trasimeno and Passignano.
