Puglia: il Tacco dello Stivale

Also known as Apulia, Puglia is located in Italy’s southeast, on the Adriatic Sea (across from Greece and Albania) and the Gulf of Taranto. This is, as some would say, the “heel” of the Italian “boot,” and in the 14th through 17th centuries, Saracen and Turkish pirates harried the region’s towns, villages and farmsteads. Landowners learned to fortify their out of the way dwellings. These fortified complexes, consisting of various masonry buildings opening onto a common courtyard accessible only through a single gated opening, are called masserie. In Puglia, these centuries-old sites have recently become fashionable and many have now been refurbished, updated and remodeled.
