Overview

The Villa Michiel was built in the 17th century as a country retreat for an important Venetian family. The elegant fatade belies a surprisingly informal interior with the beamed ceilings and terracotta floors of a country home. Frescoes adorn some rooms, a lovely backdrop to antique furnishings and a contrast to the modern, well-equipped kitchen, air-conditioned bedrooms. Extensive lawns surround the house, punctuated by statues, clipped hedges and a man-made lake. A path leads through a gate and crosses a tiny stream to reach the beautiful pool, paved in marble with wide steps and amply supplied with loungers and umbrellas. Although very private, Villa Michiel lies only twenty minutes' drive from the main docks to Venice, and the market, shops and restaurants of Mirano are within easy walking distance.

Location

 Set just outside Venice and within walking distance of Mirano, 400m/450 yards, a smaller town with plenty of shops and restaurants. Mira, on the Brenta Canal renowned for its Palladian villas, is 5 minutes' drive. There are several 18-hole golf courses in the immediate area, as well as two famous thermal spas. Venice is reached by car via Piazzale Roma, 20km/12.5 miles, then by either private motoscaffi or public vaporetto, or from the new terminal at Fusina, 17km/11 miles, and an hourly ferry ('traghetto').

Assistance

 Assistance is provided locally by the property's very efficient caretaker, who speaks a little English and lives nearby. Services included in the rental fee, and optional services available, are noted under Price and Availability.
