Torre La Cupa has been growing, room by room, since the 14th century. Originally constructed as a lookout tower, the building later came into use as a colonica, a farmhouse, and each successive generation of farmers added on space as needed. The result is a charming country home full of unexpected corners and pleasant for both small and large parties. Inside its thick stone walls the book-filled rooms have preserved their beamed ceilings and terracotta floors, and have been very tastefully decorated in a warm and welcoming style. A pretty flagstone courtyard outside the kitchen is furnished with a dining table for al fresco meals. Beautiful views of the hills around Lake Corbara, between Orvieto and Todi, can be seen from the windows, the garden and the lovely pool area set at the edge of the garden.

Low mountains rise from the east bank of the Tiber River here, dotted with hamlets of medieval origin. Acqualoreto, 5km/3 miles, is the nearest of these, built in the 10C to survey the Forello Gorge, which, although now partially flooded by Lake Corbara, is still a lovely destination for walks. It’s a 20-minute drive to hilltop Todi and about 30 minutes to Orvieto or less-known San Gemini, a lovely old village near the Roman ruins at Carsulae. Perugia, Umbria’s main city, and beautiful Assisi can both be reached in 1 hour, with the ceramic centre of Deruta on the way.
