Overview

Situated on the unpopulated western coast of the Monte Argentario peninsula, this lovely stone farmhouse offers absolute tranquillity within a glorious setting. Rescued from ruin by a well-known Italian architect, it stands now as a simple but charming summer retreat, artistically decorated in a fresh, uncluttered style. The restoration work provided the house with an air conditioned ground floor, a good kitchen and three ensuite bathrooms, and reserved the entire top floor for an airy, loft-type master bedroom. A path leads through the olive, orange and lemon trees that surround the house to a secluded pebble beach. Private pool with views over the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean before you, this is a perfect gem for a get-away-from-it-all holiday.

Location

 A wonderfully peaceful waterside setting across from tiny Rossa island on the south-west coast of Monte Argentario. A winding 7km/5 miles from Porto Santo Stefano's shops, restaurants and tennis courts, with several beaches and marinas along the way. Pebble beach just below the house.

Ground floor

 Air conditioned living room leading out under a trellis. Kitchen leading out to a small travertino terrace with a dining table facing the coast. Air conditioned twin bedroom with an ensuite bathroom with shower.

First floor

 External staircase to a very large room with a double bed [Italian Queen size] and an ensuite bathroom with shower.

Grounds

 At the foot of a steep hill, a simple and utterly peaceful garden with lemon trees and a rocky path with steps leading to the pebble beach 200m/yards away. The private swimming pool, 3.5 x 10m/11 x 32 feet, is set near the large deck for sunbathing and a dining table tucked under the trees next to the house for hot days. Wooden decking conceals the above-ground construction of the pool.

 Assistance is provided locally by the property's discreet and conscientious offsite caretaker, who does not speak English. Services included in the rental fee, and optional services available, are noted under Price and Availability.

Access

 Airports: Rome, about 2 hours; Pisa, 2 hours 40 minutes. Railway station at Orbetello, 18km/11 miles. Monte Argentario is reached via Tuscany’s coastal road and one of the two long causeways that stretch from the mainland to the presqu’ile - a total of 19km/12 miles from the mainland to the house along paved but increasingly twisting roads. Parking for two cars.

Activities

 Tennis at Porto Santo Stefano, 15 minutes. Horseback riding at Giannella, about half an hour's drive.

Pool details

 The private swimming pool, 3.5 x 10m/11 x 32 feet, has a constant depth of 1.2m/4 feet with a steps for entry/exit.
