Overview

Il Villino is a splendidly restored farmhouse that sits on a round hilltop not far from Lake Trasimeno and Chiusi on the Tuscan-Umbrian border. Extremely comfortable and filled with artistic touches, the house is decorated in a colourful blend of contemporary furniture and antiques, and filled with luxuries such as air conditioned bedrooms a jacuzzi, a steam shower, a small gym and a serious cook's kitchen. There are shady outdoor sitting and dining areas attached to both the house and a beautifully furnished pool house. The fan-shaped pool is set into an impeccably maintained lawn, with endless views of a gently rolling landscape. There is something to please everyone in this area: villages and castles to explore, a lake for boating and windsurfing, wineries and fine foods, a selection of world class golf courses, and even a semi-annual jazz festival.

Location

 Within walking distance [1km/0.5 miles] of tiny Pozzuolo, south-west of Lake Trasimeno. The fortified promontory of Castiglione del Lago offers a castle, beaches and sailing 15 minutes' drive to the north, and to the south is the little hilltop town of Chiusi with its Etruscan tombs and museums. Two more hilltop villages, Montepulciano and Cortona, can be reached in about 20 minutes, and the hilltop city of Perugia in 30 minutes. Further afield are Siena, Arezzo and Orvieto, all less than an hour away.

Grounds

 A curved gravel drive lined with clipped hedges and cypresses sets the tone for this well-kept garden. The swimming pool, 7 x 13m/23 x 42 feet, is reached through the pool house and down a short flight of steps. The pool house offers a beautiful setting for al fresco meals in a covered portico with a dining table for 12, a barbeque and a pizza oven, as well as a conservatory, a games room and a gym.

Assistance

 Assistance is provided locally by the property's very helpful caretaker, who speaks a little English and lives in an apartment with a separate entrance on the ground floor. Services included in the rental fee, and optional services available, are noted under Price and Availability.

 Tennis at Castiglione del Lago, about 10 minutes. Horseback riding and 9-hole golf club 20 minutes away in Panicale. Thermal spas at Sarteano and Montepulciano, both about 20 minutes.
