Overview
Tuscan farmers of old clearly saw a relationship between beautiful views and happy livestock; indeed, why else would Giuncaia occupy such a magnificent site? The former farmhouse is comprised of a long row of old stone buildings, all facing an endless vista of rolling hills and meadows. Much of the original woodwork has been retained or reused in this lovely conversion, and has been complemented by comfortable, tasteful furnishings. Glass doors lead from an open plan living-dining room with a big fireplace to a loggia for dining alfresco. A second loggia provides an outdoor sitting area with a billiards table. The garden unfolds above the house and includes a pretty vine-covered allée and a private swimming pool on a sunny terracotta terrace. The Maremma is a marvellous spot for a get-away-from-it-all holiday, especially for keen walkers and equestrians; there are, however, two terrific villages within a short drive of the villa, as well as the larger town of Grosseto.

A more peaceful setting would be difficult to find: the Maremma is a place of open skies and vast rolling fields. A handful of pretty hill towns dots the countryside, including Scansano, 15 minutes, known for its red wine and olive oil. The nearest shops are at Pancole, 10km/6 miles. This is a marvellous area for walking and horseback riding, but there are beaches, too, within a 30-minute drive, and an Etruscan necropolis at Roselle. Day trips might include the spectacular Monti dell'Uccellina nature reserve on the coast or the thermal baths at Saturnia, both about 45 minutes, or even the beautiful city of Siena, 1 hour 30 minutes.
