Overview

Casetta Termine is set on a hilltop in the heart of the wild Maremma region, midway between the coastal nature preserve of the Monti dell’Uccellina and southern Tuscany’s highest point, Monte Amiata. A small but very pretty stone farmhouse, it boasts wonderfully cosy interiors with high beamed ceilings, old terracotta floors and hand-painted wall finishes. The newly-installed kitchen and bathrooms have been designed to blend in with the house’s traditional feel. Two terraces offer a choice of dining areas to suit the time of day, and a path leads up through the walled garden to a swimming pool edged with natural rock. Although well off the beaten track with lovely, sweeping views, the house is only minutes away from two quite spectacular hilltop villages, Scansano and Magliano-in-Toscana, and surrounded by several up-and-coming wine-producing estates.

Location

 Peacefully set in Tuscany’s ranching country, where sheep and long-horned Maremma cattle graze near vineyards and hill towns. The nearest shops are 5km/3 miles away at Pancole, with a better selection - and tennis courts - at Scansano, 10km/6 miles, a lovely hill town with a top-notch restaurant. Grosseto is a 25km/16-mile drive, and the glorious Monti dell’ Uccellina reserve on the coast is about 45 minutes away.

 A lovely informal garden bordered by fields. The swimming pool, 6 x 10m/19 x 32 feet, which has a shallow area, is set about 20m/yards from the house and slightly uphill.

 Assistance is provided locally by the property's efficient caretaker who does not speak English, assisted by a wonderful gardener who does. Services included in the rental fee, and optional services available, are noted under Price and Availability.

Access

 Airports: Pisa, 1 hour 45 minutes; Rome, 2 hours; Florence, just over 2 hours. Railway station and motorway exit at Grosseto, 30 minutes along winding, paved roads to the property’s white access road. Parking for three cars.

Activities

 Tennis at Scansano. Several riding stables in the area. Thermal spa at Saturnia, 40 minutes. Beaches on the Monte Argentario peninsula or at Talamone (Monti dell'Uccellina reserve), both about 40 minutes.

Pool details

 The swimming pool, 6 x 10m/19 x 32 feet, has a depth of 1-2m/3-6.5 feet and steps for entry/exit.
