Until recently, Italians have been somewhat
sheepish about the fact that Puglia produces more
wine than any of its other regions, as none of it
was very good. Times have changed, however, and
a handful of producers have put the heel of Italy’s
boot firmly onto the oenologists’ maps. Enormously
fertile, Puglia was prized and settled by the Greeks,
embellished by the Normans and beloved by Holy
Roman emperor Frederick II, who contributed
several castles. Architecturally, the most interesting
spots are Baroque Lecce in the lovely Salentino
area, Alberobello for its odd little trulli houses and
Locorotondo, an all-white town laid out in
concentric circles. The sea is never far off in Puglia,
only 30km wide for much of its length, and much of
the coast is bordered by beaches that are rated
among the best in Europe.
You might say that our properties are as diverse
as Italy itself, ranging from glorious Tuscan
farmhouses to historic landmarks stuffed with
antiques and airy seaside villas designed by award winning architects. They come in all sizes. Some are charming in their simplicity; others are
downright luxurious. But they share the specific set
of qualities that are the hallmarks of a Tuscany Now property: a spectacular setting, interiors that are comfortable, welcoming and full of personality, and beautifully kept grounds with a private swimming pool or direct beach access. All our private houses include housekeeping services at least weekly. Extra services, from maids to cooks and guides, are available at many locations.
