Don´t come to Basilicata expecting to find a treasure chest of art and architecture. Lucania (the roman name for Basilicata) is one of Italy´s least-explored regions. A land of rock, mountains and forest with brief strips of coastlines touching two seas: the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian.
Together with bordering Basilicata, Calabria represent the quintessence of the Mezzogiorno, as these are the poorest regions of southern Italy. Though, Calabria is an undiscovered land of inspiring history and unspoiled natural beauty. It offers visitors two faces: its beaches are among Italy´s best and interior mountain scenery is stunning.
Legends abound in Campania: Homer and Ulysses, Virgil and other characters of classical mythology have all left their mark. Campania is a land of contrast, where a chaotic modern city (Naples), a wealth of remarkabily preserved Roman and Greek ruins (Pompeii and Paestum), and an unforgettable coastline (Amalfi coast) spotted with peaceful villages (Positano, Sorrento) coexist.
