South of Florence |
South-east of Florence the Valdarno, or valley of the Arno River (the river that flows under the Ponte Vecchio), lies between two mountain ranges, to the west the Monti del Chianti (with the Chianti wine-producing region behind), to the east the Pratomagno. A lovely Italian word, solatio, translates to ‘on the sunny side’ and explains why the flanks of the south-west facing Pratomagno are sprinkled with villages and covered in olive groves while those of the Monti del Chianti are not. A winding road called the Setteponti (‘Seven Bridges’) parallels the river about halfway up those sunny slopes and was, until the 12th century or so, the primary link between Florence and Arezzo, much used by pilgrims travelling to the great Franciscan and Benedictine abbeys at Vallombrosa, La Verna and Camaldoli. They left a trail of churches in their wake, most famously at Groppina, as well as pretty villages such as Pian di Scò, Castelfranco di Sopra and Loro Ciuffenna . Read more...
