| South east of the Chianti lays another beautiful area of Tuscany surrounding the medieval city of Montepulciano. Rolling hills with stone farmhouses, cypress trees and olive groves protect perfect vineyards lead across a golden landscape. Quieter than the Chianti or the hills around Florence, this delightful part of Tuscany is full of surprises, Pienza commissioned by Pope Piccolomini, the Val d’Orcia, Cetona, Sarteano and the Etruscan city of Chiusi to name but a few. It is a surprisingly flexible location within easy reach of Siena, Florence and on the boarder with the region of Umbria with its cities of Cortona and Orvieto. Rome is an easy drive down the motorway or an easier option is by train from Chiusi. The wine needs no introduction with some of Tuscany’s best known wineries based in this area. Rolling hills with stone farmhouses encircled by beautifully kept vineyards, now world famous! |

Montepulciano |
It’s unfortunate that the only impression most visitors get of Chiusi, one of our favourite small towns, is as an exit on the essential A1 autostrada. Follow the signs to the centro storico and you’ll find a truly lovely little museum, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, which hints at Chiusi’s past as one of the 12 cities of the Etruscan League. Find a guide to visit a few of the innumerable tombs they left behind, or enter the ‘Labyrinth of Porsenna’ (a fancy name for the etruscan- and roman-built water system under the town) through the Museo della Cattedrale.
