Chianti |
| Chianti is a confusing word. Geographically, it applies to the photogenic and reasonably well-defined area between Florence and Siena. In the world of wines, however, the term is used with a great deal more elasticity: everyone who makes wine wants to be a part of it. Proper Chianti, called Classico, is produced in the region bounded by the Monti del Chianti in the east and, in the west, by the high ridge, topped by Barberino Val d’Elsa, which divides the Greve and the Pesa river valleys. Seven ‘sub-zones,’ however, also have the right to use the Chianti name and stretch all the way from Pisa (Chianti Colline Pisane) across to Arezzo (Chianti Colli Aretini) and southwards to overlap with Montalcino and Montepulciano. About a quarter of Chianti is planted in vines, covering some 4,000ha/ 10,000 acres (one-third of the cultivated area of Bordeaux and the Napa Valley, one-seventh of the greater Burgundy region).
