A graceful pink city associated with opera and romance, Verona is a delight to explore with performances from June-August. Set 20 minutes south of the city and 4km/3 miles from the small town of Vigasio, Villa Zambonina is also within easy driving distance of Lake Garda, 20 minutes, and the very pretty village of Sirmione on its southern, palm fringed shore. An area as good for grapes as it is for golfing, three famous wine regions - Bardolino, Soave and Valpolicella - and two 18-hole courses all lie within in hour's drive of the property. Expect to put on a few pounds during a holiday in this area, where the specialties include rich risottos and creamy polentas; as an antidote, there are wonderful walking and biking routes through the vineyards and especially along Lake Garda.
