In the middle ages, the Via di Setteponti ('Road of the Seven Bridges') along the base of the Pratomagno mountains was the main link between Arezzo and Florence with the journey requiring several days on foot; a motorway along the Tiber River reduces the time to little more than one hour. Campogialli, 1km/0.5 miles with a bar an a small food shop, lies in the gentle, green hills just south of the old road, and 5km/3 miles east of Gropina's beautiful church from that period. San Giustino, 2km/1 mile offers a wider selection of shops, restaurant and a bank. Most of the old towns in the area, including Loro Ciuffena, 8km/5 miles, have expanded beyond their medieval cores but tiny Borro, 5km/3 miles, has shrunk. Arezzo is reached within 30 minutes, and the centre of Florence, under 1 hour. The Chianti region lies just across the valley, with tastings at Gaiole’s cooperativo, 40 minutes, a good place to start.
