The Tuscan term fattoria refers to a working farm, where grapes or olives are pressed and processed for wine or oil. In medieval times the Vecchia Fattoria was the centre of one of the Grand Duke of Tuscany's richest estates. Today its lovely old wrought iron gates lead straight into the little main square of Bettolle, a quiet hilltop village with several good small restaurants. The house is very comfortably furnished in an elegant old world style, with a vast high-ceilinged living room featuring a spectacular carved stone fireplace. There are whimsical touches in every bedroom, although the bathrooms are modern and, for the most part, ensuite. The old cypresses and umbrella pines in the manicured garden bear testimony to the property's history, and screen a nicely situated pool with an adjacent dining area and summer kitchen.
