Overview
Once a lookout tower for the village of Semifonte dating back a thousand years, over the centuries the original tower has been extended with a beautiful stone villa, that has been restored with modern furnishing, the converted barn being implemented about two hundred years ago. Semifonte, once an important commercial centre, was attached and subsequently destroyed in 1204 in which the Florentines and Senesi allied for the first and only time. The siege lasting several years saw Florence win and destroy the village; the only remains are several towers one of which is Torre di Semifonte. Uninhabitable and left to ruins, the tower was restored with antique terracotta tiles and furnished with antiques, and even though not to its original height still commands stunning views of the valley below and San Gimignano. Barberino Val d’ Elsa, a small medieval town, 3km/2miles away, surrounded by it’s walls and doorway to the town housing a small selection of shops and a couple of informal restaurants. It lies along a beautiful road with views of the Colli Fiorentini on one side and the Val d’Elsa on the other. Restoration commenced over two years ago during which time works were halted due to the discovery of seas fossils, archaeologists say that some 60 million years ago the lush plans visible today was in fact covered by the sea. Some of the fossils are on show within the villa and others imbibed in the tufo. Handmade terracotta floors tiles set the style of the wonderful villa lovingly transformed into a country home, furnished to a high standard complimented with antique and modern furniture. The modern kitchen lies at the centre of the house, again following suit modern bathrooms and air-conditioning throughout. The private infinity-edged pool lies on a lower terrace furnished with sun loungers and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. |
