On the south-western coast of Sicily, 10 minutes from the spectacular ruins at Selinunte and a string of white beaches. The nearest shops are at Castelvetrano, 3km/2 miles. An excellent motorway runs between Castelvetrano and Palermo, 1 hour to the centre, a wonderful city for touring with some very unusual sights. There are two worthwhile detours on the way: the little solitary temple of Segesta and Monreale, for a look at its mosaic-encrusted Duomo. Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples lie about 100km/62 miles to the east.

Tennis at Castelvetrano. A beautiful white sand beach (with a great little restaurant) is just past Selinunte, 10 minutes. A sports complex with two championship golf courses is due to open in 2009 at Sciacca, 36km/22 miles.
