The Maremma is central Italy’s ranching country, an area of wide open skies, gently rolling hills with herds of sheep and cattle and scattered hill towns. There are thermal spas here, Etruscan tombs, beautiful coastal nature reserves and, in the very south, the chic beaches of the Monte Argentario peninsula. This is not a destination for determined tourists, but it’s ideal for those who enjoy a more leisurely pace, with long walks and meandering drives through lovely countryside. Soleanda is secluded but not remote: the beach at Monte Argentario is only 10 minutes away, and Saturnia’s spa can be reached within about 30 minutes.
