Overview
Until the middle of the twentieth century every hamlet in Italy had a communal bread oven where villagers gathered weekly to bake their dough and enjoy a good chat. The advent of commercial bakeries and electric appliances brought an end to the practise, and Toiano’s oven, which dated from 1780, fell into disuse and, eventually, ruins. Podere Toiano is built from the stones of that once-cheerful oven and the farmhouse that stood nearby. Set on a hilltop within 40 acres of private land, the new villa gazes out over the gentle hills of the Alta Valdera, midway between Pisa and medieval San Gimignano. The stones and the old ceiling beams have been incorporated into a beautifully-finished new country home with masses of personality and charm. Warm colours, soft furnishings and contemporary art play counterpoint to local antiques, woven rugs and terracotta floors. Several of the air-conditioned bedrooms open directly to the garden and the bathrooms bright and modern. French doors lead from the large and very well-equipped fitted kitchen to a dining loggia with wonderful views, and steps lead down between olive trees to the villa’s private swimming pool on a sunny terrace at the foot of the garden. |
