Orvieto, near the meeting point of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio, is unarguably of one Italy’s most beautiful and interesting hill towns. Set on a high plateau of purplish rock, it boasts a glorious black-and-white striped duomo and an underground network of tunnels, catacombs and wells that date from various periods of siege. It is also wonderfully located for touring villages, vineyards, castles, lakes and caves in all three regions. Pietra Campana faces Orvieto across a gentle valley, and lies just below the large 16C villa with which it shares a swimming pool. Freshly restored and redecorated, the two-storey cottage features high beamed ceilings, terracotta floors and a brand new stainless steel kitchen. Glass doors from the kitchen lead out to a private section of the extensive garden and - good news for cooks - to a substantial vegetable patch.
