In the historic south-east of Sicily, where UNESCO-protected monuments and towns lie minutes from beaches and coastal nature reserves, Le Corti di Cannamara gazes towards the Mediterranean from a high plateau studded with olive and carob trees. Built around a large central courtyard studded with palm trees, the beautifully restored stone building and its two guest suites ressemble a charming hamlet. A glassed-in breezeway connects the various entrances. The courtyard offers one of several dining areas, a long table shaded by the palms and served by a barbeque and wood oven; a second area, with a full summer kitchen, stands under a large loggia near the swimming pool with glorious views of the sea and the property’s flowering, scented garden. The beautifully decorated interiors are full of little luxuries and interesting features: a massive fireplace with a rough oak mantlepiece, a Turkish bath finished in mosaics, air-conditioned bedrooms, intimate sitting rooms for quiet afternoons with a book and a wonderful fitted kitchen. One would be sorely tempted to do nothing but enjoy the villa’s privacy and peacefulness were it not surrounded such a wealth of sights.
