Le Casaline borders on the Monterufoli forest reserve, home to an endangered breed of wild pony, as well as wild boar, porcupine, deer, fox and other wildlife. The reserve is at the heart of the Collini Metallifere, the gentle, mineral-rich hills set in the middle of a rough square formed by Etruscan Volterra to the north, coastal Castagneto Carducci to the west, medieval Massa Marittima to the south and the magnificent Abbey of San Galgano to the east, all within 30-40 minutes’ drive of the property. Closer at hand is Serrazzano, 1.5km/1 mile, a tiny hilltop village with a bank, a pharmacy, a butcher, an old church and a weekly market. A restaurant, well known for its roast wild boar and home-made pasta, is just 3 km/2 miles away. Wine enthusiasts will enjoy driving along the Strada del Vino Costa degli Etruschi, an itinerary that includes many of the Super Tuscan vineyards - begin at Bolgheri, 45 minutes.
