La Torre di Larniano was constructed as a medieval defence tower over eight hundred years ago on Etruscan foundations. Farmers came to occupy the building over the centuries, each adding on space as their families grew. The result, in twenty-first century terms, is a large and beautiful country home that is full of history and charm and sits, with three other medieval towers, at the centre of a two hundred acre farm estate producing wine and olive oil in the hills near San Gimignano. The interior, which is divided into two self-contained residences, bears lovely touches such as a glorious 17th century open fireplace, antique furnishings throughout and a reading room which occupies the entire top floor of the tower itself. The bedrooms and all four living areas overlook well kept lawns leading down to the swimming pool terrace, which is furnished with plenty of umbrellas and loungers.
