Overview Marvellously located in an historic hill town near the Tuscan-Umbrian border, Fattoria di Sarteano is a spacious and beautifully decorated residence of a very high standard. The building originated as a convent in the 1400s, but owes its unusual configuration and name to centuries of use as the headquarters of a prosperous agricultural estate. Two gates provide entry to the property, one from the main street of the village with its shops and restaurants, and the other that quickly leads to open fields and forests. The ground floor is given over to interconnected living and dining areas decorated with lovely antiques, and a large and very charming kitchen with a fireplace and breakfast table. Painted, beamed or vaulted ceilings overlook the rooms, the largest of which opens to a large sunny terrace furnished for outdoor meals. Upstairs, the bedrooms, each with an ensuite or private adjoining bathroom, feature four-poster beds or large windows with sweeping views. A long indoor swimming pool, equipped with a jet for counter-current swimming, opens to a walled flowering garden on the building’s lowest level, where a gym and a sheltered games room with ping-pong and table football offer an antidote to oversized meals and rainy weather. The town of Sarteano, set high in the foothills of Mount Cetona, is one of the oldest and most picturesque in the area, and provides an excellent base for scenic drives and sightseeing excursions.
