Il Trebbio was constructed seven hundred years ago as a small, fortified castle for a member of the powerful Guidi family, whose fiefdom stretched as far as the Casentino Valley. The lovely old building sits on a hilltop surrounded by rolling hills just minutes away from Castellina-in-Chianti. Ancient stone walls belie luxuriously furnished interiors in which traditional beamed ceilings and tiled floors provide a backdrop to a valuable collection of local antiques and contemporary paintings. The gentle hillside setting allows rooms on two floors to access the very pretty terraced garden, and makes the large, infinity-edged pool seem to float above the surrounding fields. Two large loggias offer shady spots for lounging. Il Trebbio, which translates as ‘The Harvest’, lies in the heart of the Chianti wine-producing area, a stone’s throw from several very good restaurants and within easy driving distance of both Siena and Florence.
