The deep valley of the Vara River runs parallel to the Ligurian coast and the famous villages of the Cinque Terre. Il Molinello, a restored water mill, is set within walking distance of Brugnato, historically the most important of the many pretty alpine-like villages that dot these hills. The owner used local artisans and materials to reconstruct the building, which features hand-hewn beams on the ceilings, beautiful wooden floors on the upper storeys and even hand-made shutters - all made from local chestnuts. The new, fitted kitchen opens onto a dining pergola swathed in old vines and facing a lovely garden with a private swimming pool. Il Molinello’s location is ideal for exploring both the coast and the lesser-known Ligurian hinterland.
