The Ombrone River bisects the Tuscan Maremma and some of the region’s loveliest beaches before meeting the sea in a vast, protected delta that can be explored by kayak and canoe. The nearest shops to the house are at Istia d’Ombrone, 5km/3 miles, with a broader choice just beyond at Grosseto, the Maremma’s largest town. A terrific restaurant for meat- and fish-lovers is closer at hand, 1.km/1 mile away. To the north are the remains of two Etruscan cities, Russelae and Vetulonia; to the south-east, the pretty hill town of Scansano, known for its red wine and olive oil, and to west and south, the beaches at Marina di Grosseto, 22km/14 miles, the glorious nature reserve of the Monti dell’Uccellina and the chic resort towns of the Monte Argentario peninsula.
