In the lovely hills between the steep, forested Alpi Apuane and Tuscany’s beach-fringed northern coast. The walled town of Lucca, 10km/6 miles, is one of the loveliest in Italy, its straight Roman streets punctuated by little piazzas and churches. In the surrounding hills are several spectacular Renaissance villas, now open to the public. The village of Cappella, 2km/1 mile (downhill), offers the nearest food shops, with a better selection at Monte San Quirico, 4km/2.5 miles, or at Lucca, 6km/4 miles. The beaches at Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are about 30km/19 miles’ drive. Pisa and Florence can both be reached in roughly an hour by car.
