A more peaceful setting would be difficult to find: the Maremma is a place of open skies and vast rolling fields. A handful of pretty hill towns dots the countryside, including Scansano, 15 minutes, known for its red wine and olive oil. The nearest shops are at Pancole, 10km/6 miles. This is a marvellous area for walking and horseback riding, but there are beaches, too, within a 30-minute drive, and an Etruscan necropolis at Roselle. Day trips might include the spectacular Monti dell'Uccellina nature reserve on the coast or the thermal baths at Saturnia, both about 45 minutes, or even the beautiful city of Siena, 1 hour 30 minutes.

Nicely-kept terraced garden with stands of lavender. Facing the valley, on the same level as the house, is small lawned area with a terracotta terrace; a vine-covered allée fills the terrace just above the house while the uppermost level is occupied by a private swimming pool, 12 x 5m/39 x 16 feet, on a terracotta terrace with wonderful views of the hills. The pool has an electrically-operated cover to electric cover to keep it warm at night and secure for children.
