Overview
In older, simpler, times, Crocci di Sotto appeared on maps as the lower of two crosses, and so it has become known - the ‘Lower Cross.’ It was built about 400 years as a farmhouse when, typical for those days, the farmer’s family lived upstairs with their animals on the floor below. The present owners have refurbished the house from top to bottom, preserving the best of the original features - the weathered doors, beautiful old floors, the grand fireplace in the sitting room and wonderfully crooked beams in the ceilings - and found local craftsmen to recreate whatever time and wear had rendered unsalvageable. The bathrooms and kitchen, however, are modern and imported although designed to match the spirit of the building, and the gardens, with their fruit trees and private swimming pool, have nothing at all to do with the property’s early function. The result is a charming, sun-filled country home with masses of character, every modern comfort - from soft couches to satellite TV – and a lovely view of the 10th century Castello di Sorbello. The property straddles the Tuscan-Umbrian border in an area of lovely walking trails, within easy reach of Lake Trasimeno and hilltop Perugia on the Umbrian side, and medieval Cortona and Montepulciano, the famous wine centre, in Tuscany. |
