Perched on the optimistically-named Poggio Felice (‘Happy Hill’), Case Giorgi is a classic Tuscan farmhouse dating from the 15th century. With views that stretch over the property’s olive groves to the Mediterranean as far as Elba and, on a clear day, even Corsica, the house is set in the loveliest part of the Maremma, an area known for its peaceful hill towns, its white long-horned cattle and the excellent Morellino wines. While the house has retained many of its original features - notably the kitchen’s flagstone floor and enormous fireplace - these have been tastefully combined with modern essentials such as new appliances, satellite television and ensuite bathrooms for every bedroom. The air-conditioned guest house, in a converted stone barn next to the swimming pool, offers an idyllic retreat for two. Both houses are decorated with warmth and taste in a style that sets off the old beamed ceilings and whitewashed walls. Outside, a large loggia provides a shady spot for dining and lounging, and, just below the house, the pool and its stone terrace offer a tempting alternative to sightseeing on sunny days.
