Straddling the famed Via Chiantigiana, the pretty hilltop village of Panzano overlooks a formation of hills known as the Conca d'Oro (the 'Golden Shell') for its ability to trap the sunshine and produce grapes of an exceptional quality that, in turn, yield some of Tuscany's finest vintages. On its own hilltop just outside Panzano sits Casa al Monte, a 13th century stone watchtower now converted into a lovely, rambling country retreat. Inside, the old terracotta floors and beamed ceilings have been preserved in rooms decorated with fine local antiques and crafts. Grassy terraces surround house and are reached directly from many of the living spaces and bedrooms. A loggia and lovely old trees provide shady areas for outdoor dining and for lounging by the pool. The views are spectacular in every direction, including vineyards, chestnut forests and a sprinking of medieval villages.
