A pretty stone cottage in the hills between Perugia and Umbertide, Casa Mentuccia is a wonderfully peaceful spot for keen walkers, medieval village enthusiasts – and golfers. A large, very nicely decorated room on the ground floor offers a cosy living and dining area with a high, beamed ceiling, comfortable couches and a big fireplace. Two sets of glass doors open to the garden, allowing breezes and the unique Umbrian light to fill the room. Woven rugs and lovely quilts are scattered throughout the house, the perfect complement to the attractive antique tables and wardrobes and the traditional terracotta floors. A wide lawn bordered in lavender and olive trees sweeps around the house, with a simple stone terrace set aside for outdoor dining. Through the olive trees a lap pool is positioned for a wonderful view of the hills. There are countless walking trails in the area, some leading from one village to the next, others up to the summits of any one of three mountains. For a touch of ‘civilization’, Perugia and Umbertide are less than half an hour’s drive, as are two 18-hole golf courses.
