Overview
In the 12th century the town of Semifonte, just west of the Chianti Classico, was so prosperous that it merited a mention in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy; by 1202 it had been razed to the ground by rampaging Florentines. Casa Grazia was erected as a watchtower in the aftermath, but as the town was never rebuilt it gradually settled into a quieter existence as a farmer’s home. Now restored and enlarged, the building has preserved many of its original features without losing any sense of the past. The stone work, beamed ceilings, quirky windows and a lovely old fireplace remain, but comfortable furnishings, a modern kitchen and new bathrooms have turned the tower into a wonderful country retreat. The views, which have changed little over the centuries, can be admired from almost every window but most especially from the hot tub positioned at the edge of the terrace. From here you can plan excursions to the wine centre of Barberino Val d’Elsa or the beautiful walled city of San Gimignano, both minutes away. |
