On a quiet winding road 14km/9 miles north-east of medieval Massa Marittima, in an area known as the Colline Metallifere for its mineral wealth and resulting range of colours in the soil and rocks. The minerals, exploited in the Middle Ages, are now exhausted but the old miners’ villages remain as lovely backwaters - and the fine wines produced here have attracted a good deal of interest in recent times, and some excellent restaurants have opened to cater the enthusiasts. The village of Montieri, 7km/4 miles, boasts several shops, a very good pizzeria, tennis courts, riding stables a bank and a post office. Roccatederighi, 19km/12 miles, with great views and tiny steep alleys, is carved into a needle of rock. Siena, 1 hour.
