Facing west over a hilly landscape of olive groves, vineyards and the occasional stone farmhouse, Acqua e Miele (‘Milk and Honey’) is set in one of the most interesting parts of Umbria. Hill towns abound here, many of them founded in ancient Roman times as staging posts along their key trade route to the north. A thorough restoration has converted this old farmhouse into a marvellously user-friendly country retreat, with a fitted kitchen, brand new bathrooms with big showers, a games room and even high-speed internet. Plenty of the original character remains, along with traditionally Tuscan features such as a loggia for dining alfresco. A lawn dotted with olive trees wraps around the house and leads to a swimming pool with a large shallow area for children and plenty of loungers for sunbathing.
