destinations in Milan is the Teatro alla Scala (La  Scala), perhaps the
best-known opera house in the entire world. It is the performance home
for three top-notch groups: La Scala Theater Ballet, La Scala Theater
Choir, and La Scala Theater Orchestra. The complex also houses a museum
and the La Scala Theater Academy, a school for the professional
instruction in the performing arts. Visitors can see many props and
other artifacts from the theater’s storied history, which dates from
1778. The theater got its name from the church Santa Maria della Scala,
which was deconsecrated and destroyed to make way for the theater’s
construction. Tours are available for groups of no more than twenty
five at a time and can be pre-arranged in languages other than Italian.
There is a wonderful gift shop there as well, which offers beautiful La
Scala items including DVD’s, CD’s, books, clothing and a variety of
other items in all price ranges. La Scala seats 2,800 people and the
theater now boasts a state-of-art system called an electronic libretto
with which visitors can view the opera being performed with subtitles
in their own language on small individual screens located on the seat
back in front of them so that they can better understand the
performance.
